A US-based Foundation, the Crain/Jefferson Enrichment Foundation, has offered scholarships to 10 brilliant students of Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria.
Four out of the 10 lucky students were on Wednesday presented with their letters of award by the Sponsor/ Founder of the Foundation, Valentino Maurice Jefferson who came to Kano, Nigeria in order to meet with the awardees, while the remaining six students will be presented with their award letters at a later date.
The students who were selected after undergoing rigorous screening exercise, are studying various programs in the university including Physiotherapy, Nursing Science and Medical Laboratory.
It would be recalled that the Foundation had last year announced the establishment of the C/JEF American Sponsors Scholarship to be awarded to disadvantaged African students who desire to study at the Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria.
The scholarship was created out of a common desire that C/JEF shares with MAAUN’s founder, Prof. Adamu Abubakar Gwarzo, which is to help equip youths with the ability to further their education so they can better serve the communities in which they live.
Speaking at the occasion, the President/Founder MAAUN Group of Universities, Prof. Adamu Abubakar expressed profound appreciation to Valentino Maurice Jefferson for his decision to sponsor the students irrespective of their social, cultural and religious background.
He urged well-to-do individuals in the society to borrow a leaf from Mr. Jefferson in order to empower the youth as according to him education is the bedrock of socio-economic development.
Prof. Gwarzo charged the beneficiaries to make the best use of the opportunity and consider themselves lucky for being selected out of over 3,000 students who applied for the scholarship.
Earlier, Mr. Jefferson said the idea behind the introduction of the scholarship was borne out of his desire and commitment to sustain his mother’s legacy who was passionate about education.
Mr. Jefferson, who described MAAUN as an amazing institution, urged the students not to disappoint him saying I’m confident we have selected the best.
