Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria on Thursday participated at the two-day workshop organized by the Media and Information Literacy and Intercultural Dialogue Foundation (MILID Foundation), in collaboration with UNESCO.
The university, one of the only two institutions in Kano honored with the invitation, was represented by her students from different departments across the five existing schools, in the company of Professor Muktar Saidu, the Dean, School of Social and Management Sciences.
The annual event, marking the 2024 celebration of Global Media and Information Literacy (MIL) Week, aimed to promote media literacy and foster critical engagement with information.
The week, observed every October, brought together students, educators, and policymakers to explore the role of media in shaping peaceful societies and combating misinformation.
Held from 22-24 October, participants from two universities; Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria and Yusuf Maitama Sule University Kano, were exposed to important roles of media in conflict resolution.
During the event, a key session was facilitated by Dr. Khadijah Sanusi Gumbi, a faculty member at MAAUN Kano, who presented a paper on “The Role of Media in Conflict.”
Dr. Khadijah, a seasoned academic, explained how the media can serve as a tool for either inciting violence or fostering peace, depending on how information is framed and disseminated.
She emphasized the importance of ethical journalism, accurate reporting, and media literacy in promoting intercultural dialogue and mitigating conflict.
The MILID-UNESCO workshop also featured a capacity-building training for youth and youth-led organisations in northwest Nigeria on the importance of media and information literacy.
