MAAUN Research Institute Organizes Training for Youth on Artificial Intelligence for Political Engagement

The Institute of Africa Higher Education Research and Innovation (IAHERI), in collaboration with Career Guidance, Training and Placement Office, Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria has organized a two-day training program for some selected youths on Artificial Intelligence for Political Engagement.

The training program themed: Empowering Youth on Artificial Intelligence for Political Engagement which was sponsored by Engr. Sagir Ibrahim Koki, Member House of Representatives, Kano Municipal Federal Constituency, aims to empower the youth on how to use AI effectively for political engagement.

In his welcome remark, the Director of IAHERI, Prof. Abubakar Sadiq Haruna, said the training program is very important as it would go a long way in making the participants creative and innovative.

Prof. Haruna called on the participants to make the best use of the opportunity provided by the Federal Lawmaker as he is the first to collaborate with Maryam Abacha American University to provide training to the youth on AI.

He, therefore, called on other Lawmakers to emulate Engr. Koki by sponsoring similar programs for the socio-economic development of the youth in the state and the country at large.

Also in his opening remarks, the President of MAAUN, Prof. (Dr.) Mohammad Israr said the program was designed to equip the participants with AI skills to enable them to participate more effectively in the political process.

While appreciating the initiative, Prof Israr said the university looked forward to continued collaboration in shaping the future of the nation.

Four international scholars of high repute presented papers on the first day of the occasion including Associate Prof. Ma’azu Jibrin Musa, Prof Ibrahim Lawal, Engr. Salihu Yahaya and Associate Prof. O. Elijah

The first speaker, Prof. O. Elijah presented his paper on Critical Thinking and Fact Checking which dwelled on identifying and countering misinformation with AI as well as how to detect wrong information.

The second paper, Digital Content Creation was presented by Associate Professor, Engr. Mu’azu Jibrin while the third and the fourth papers, Social Media Leadership and Ethical Use of AI were delivered by Engr. Salihu Yahaya and Prof Ibrahim respectively.

Other MAAUN Management staff members that graced the opening ceremony included Vice President Campus Life, Dr. Hamza Garba; Head, Career Guidance, Training and Placement, Engr. Bashir Garba; and his Assistant, Mrs Janvi Haresh among others.

In his remarks at the closing ceremony, Engr. Koki said the decision to sponsor the training program was informed by his desire to empower unemployed youths to enable them to become self-reliant and contribute to the economic growth and development of Kano State.

The Lawmaker, who pledged to continue to provide his constituents with the much-needed dividends of democracy, gave assurance of his commitment to working with MAAUN to move the state to the higher level.

Highlight of the closing ceremony included the presentation of certificates and HP laptops to each of the participants.

Prominent politicians and top government officials including the State Commissioner of Science and Technology, Dr. Yusuf Kofar-Mata among others attended the closing ceremony.
