The students of the Department of Physiotherapy, Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria (MAAUN) on Tuesday, 9th September, 2025, joined the global community in commemorating 2025 World Physiotherapy Day.
The 2025 World Physiotherapy Day themed, “Healthy Ageing: Preventing Falls and Frailty,” brought together students, staff, and invited guests to raise awareness and highlight the importance of physiotherapy in healthcare service.
in his welcome address, the Acting President of MAAUN, Prof. Ahmad Ibrahim Maigari described physiotherapy as both a necessity and an essential field, in health as well as a career.
He expressed gratitude to the university’s Founder, Prof. Adamu Abubakar Gwarzo, for his unwavering support in making the event possible, while also appreciating the organizers and the Nigerian Association of Physiotherapy Students (NAPS) MAAUN branch.
In his goodwill message, the Dean, School of Health Sciences, Dr. Kabiru Mustapha, congratulated physiotherapy students and expressed his delight for being part of the celebration.
The Vice President Campus Life, Dr. Hamza Garba, praised the students for hard work and efforts in organizing the program despite limited resources, noting that the Department of Physiotherapy is preparing to produce not only professional leaders in Nigeria but across the world.
He also thanked the Head of Department for providing the students with wonderful mentorship and leadership stressing that the physiotherapy department is one of best departments in the school.
The Acting Head of Department of Physiotherapy in MAAUN, Dr. Naziru Bashir Mukthar, commended the students for organizing the event, saying the program was purely an initiative of the students of the department.
He said as part of activities to commemorate the day, the team Physiotherapy MAAUN had earlier participated in a football tournament organized by the Kano State chapter of the Nigerian Society of Physiotherapy where team MAAUN triumphed over four teams– Bayero University Kano, Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, National Orthopaedics Hospital Dala and the coalition of Hospital Management Board Hospitals of Kano.
While appreciating the Founder, organisers and students of the department, Dr. Mukhtar explained that the current theme of World Physiotherapy Day would remain relevant for the next five years, as it guides people, particularly the elderly, children, and other vulnerable groups on living healthier lives.
The event featured a series of student-led activities, including academic presentations, a debate on the topic “Physiotherapy Focuses on Prevention Rather than Cure,” a quiz competition, poetry recitals, and a short drama performance.
Highlight of the event included presentation of certificates to participants while winners of the quiz competition received cash prizes, while debate participants were also recognized
The event which was held at the Professor Abubakar Adamu Rasheed Twin Lecture Theatre, was also attended by the Head, Career Guidance Training and Placement of MAAUN, Engr. Bashir Garba and some faculty, among others
