Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria, (MAAUN), on Monday 10th July 2023 flagged off the second Students’ Week Program organized by the Campus Life Directorate of the University.
The event, which was designed to provide a wide range of recreational experiences and opportunities for students, faculty and staff of the University, kicked off at the Ibrahim Usman Yakasai Sports Complex.
The institution used the occasion as a tribute to the founder of the University, Prof. Adamu Abubakar Gwarzo, in recognition of his incredible efforts towards making life easier for the less privileged in the society through his philanthropic services.
The week-long program started with football matches among the students of the four Schools of the university.
In his opening remarks, the President of the University, Prof. (Dr.) Mohammad Israr, emphasized the importance of the sporting activities among students as it plays a significant role in improving their physical and mental health.
According to him, sporting activities promote unity and socialization among students in addition to playing a great role in entertaining spectators.
He, therefore, called on other students who are not partaking in the activities to do so next time for the development of their physical and mental health.
Also in his remarks, the Founder and Chairman Governing Council of the University, Prof. Adamu Abubakar Gwaro, commended the organizers of the program and called for its sustenance.
He tasked the students to make the best use of the week-long program to develop their skills.
Earlier in his welcome address, the Vice President Campus Life, Dr. Hamza Garba, said the event would give students the opportunity to showcase their God given talents and skills in the various sporting competitions to be presented in the week.
The football match which was keenly contested, was first played between students of school of Health Sciences and Nursing Sciences where students of Health Sciences thrashed students of Nursing Sciences 2-0.
The second match was played between students of School of Social and Management Science and that of School of Computing which ended 5-3 against students of School of Computing.
Among the activities lined up in the week-long program are Inter School Debate, Cooking Competition, Bilingual Drama, Poetry Presentation, Educational as well as Cultural Display.
Others are Old School Show, Fashion Show, Human Figure, Speech of Renowned Icon, Colour Festival and other games such as Sack Race, Egg on Spoon, among others.
