Celebrating 30 Years of Interfaith Dialogue: MAAUN Champions Sustained Peacebuilding and National Unity in Nigeria

The celebration marking 30 years of interfaith dialogue in Nigeria was successfully held at the Conference Hall of the Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution, Abuja.

The event brought together distinguished leaders, faith communities, scholars, and development practitioners committed to strengthening Nigeria’s longstanding culture of peaceful coexistence. The occasion was chaired by former Chief of Defence Staff, Lt. Gen. Martins Luther Agwai (Rtd.), whose leadership and reflections underscored the significance of dialogue as a tool for national unity and conflict mitigation. Participants highlighted key milestones recorded by Rev. Dr. James Movel Wuye and Imam Dr. Mohammed Nuryn Ashafa the Co-founders of the Interfaith Mediation Center Kaduna over the past three decades and the continuing relevance of interfaith engagement in addressing contemporary peace and security challenges.

A high-level delegation from the African Institute for Solutions and Development (AISD), the development arm of the Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria (MAAUN), Kano, was led by Prof. (Dr.) Mohammed Israr, President of MAAUN. As Special Guest, Prof. Israr delivered a goodwill message in which he commended the organizers for sustaining interfaith dialogue as a cornerstone of national peacebuilding.

He emphasized the need to further institutionalize dialogue platforms, promote inclusivity, and strengthen partnerships between academia, civil society, and government. Prof. Israr concluded by wishing Nigeria continued progress in fostering mutual understanding, harmony, and sustained peace through meaningful dialogue
