The Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) has sought collaboration with the Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria (MAAUN), Kano, for the celebration of the 2026 International Day for Universal Access to Information.
The CITAD team, led by Sani Khamees, Senior Programs Officer, made the request during a visit to the Acting President of MAAUN, Prof. Ibrahim Alhaji Lawal.
The celebration, scheduled for September 28, 2026, is expected to feature a panel discussion on the theme, “Upholding Information Integrity in the Digital Age: The Role of Access to Information in Addressing Information Disorder.”
As part of the proposed collaboration, two speakers from MAAUN’s Department of Mass Communication will be invited to participate in the panel discussion.
Other speakers are expected from Bayero University Kano (BUK), Kano Polytechnic and Skyline University.
Prof. Ibrahim Alhaji Lawal welcomed the proposed collaboration, noting that access to reliable information is essential to promoting informed citizenship, academic development and responsible digital engagement.
He expressed MAAUN’s readiness to support initiatives that advance information integrity and knowledge sharing, particularly those that provide students and academics with opportunities to engage with emerging issues in the digital information environment.
The collaboration is expected to provide a platform for academics, students and other stakeholders to discuss access to information, information integrity and the growing challenge of information disorder in the digital age.
