MAAUN, CITAD call for Information Integrity, Digital Responsibility

Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria (MAAUN), in collaboration with the Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD), has called for greater responsibility in the creation, sharing and consumption of information in the digital age.

The call was made on Monday, during the commemoration of the 2026 International Day for Universal Access to Information at MAAUN.

The programme, held at the School of Social Sciences, was themed: “Upholding Information Integrity in the Digital Age: The Role of Access to Information in Addressing Information Disorder.”

The event brought together communication experts, students and members of the wider university community to examine the growing challenge of misinformation and promote responsible engagement in the digital space.

Speaking at the event, the Acting President of MAAUN, Prof. Ibrahim Alhaji Lawal, said access to timely and credible information was essential for building trust and supporting informed decision-making.

He commended MAAUN and CITAD for organising the programme, stressing the importance of reliable information to a healthy information environment.

The Dean, School of Social Sciences, Dr Abdulaziz Ibrahim, said the programme offered students and staff an opportunity to deepen their understanding of information disorder and responsible digital communication.

Three resource persons presented papers at the event. They included Malam Rabi’u Ya’u Sulaiman, Head of the Department of Mass Communication, MAAUN; Mrs Maryam Muhammad, and Dr Usman Bashir, Head of the Department of Mass Communication, Skyline University.

The presentations generated active participation from students and staff, who asked questions and shared views on fake news, misinformation, social media and information verification.

In his closing remarks, the VP Admin of MAAUN, Dr Habib Awais Abubakar, commended the organisers, resource persons, staff and students for their contributions, urging participants to remain vigilant, verify information before sharing it and promote responsible digital engagement.
