MAAUN holds Sixth Online Lecture Series on Mycotoxins, Chronic Diseases

Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria, on Friday held its Sixth Online Lecture Series organized by the university’s International Faculty as part of an effort to promote e-learning among students of the university.

The webinar series with the theme: “Mycotoxins and Chronic Diseases–A Public Health Perspectives”, was aimed at exposing students of Health Science on types of Mycotoxins and their health impacts.

In addition, the lecture identified some of the Mycotoxin induced problems which includes red eyes, coughing, fever, joint pain, headache, nosebleeding, rash and muscle pain, among others.

In his presentation, Dr. Sajid Mehmood, Assistant Professor, Pir Mehr Ali Shah Arid Agriculture University, Rawalpindi, Pakistan, explained how mycotoxins enter the body as well as its effects on the immune and metabolic systems.

According to him, chronic diseases linked to Mycotoxins included Cancer, liver, Kidney and cardiovascular diseases.

Others are neurological disorders and respiratory issues among others.

Dr. Mehmood who, spoke at length on the impacts of mycotoxins on Public Healthcare and its burden on healthcare systems, vulnerable populations as well as
economic impact of contaminated crops and healthcare costs, called for research on detection, prevention , and risk assessment of the disease.

According to him the.research will ensure better understanding of mycotoxin impacts on chronic diseases, development of effective control measures, public health interventions and safe food practices.

The virtual lecture was attended by students, faculties and management staff of the university including the President of the university, Prof. (Dr.) Mohammad Israr.

Others were the Deans of Schools of Health Science and Nursing Science, Dr. Kabir Mustpha Yakasai and Dr. Umar Bello respectively.
