Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria (MAAUN), Kano, through its development arm, the African Institute for Solutions and Development (AISD), hosted the UNESCO World Heritage Volunteers (WHV) to promote preservation and appreciation of cultural heritage.
This year’s initiative was themed “Working on the Future: Explore and Experience the Ancient Kano City Walls and Associated Sites.”
The event, held at MAAUN’s Prof Abubakar Adamu Rasheed Twin Theatre, brought together government funtionaries, heritage experts, and representatives from the National Commission for Museums and Monuments.
In a remark, the President of MAAUN, Prof. (Dr.) Mohammad Israr, expressed delight over the selection of the university as a host, describing the initiative as a reflection of MAAUN’s commitment to academic excellence, innovation, and cultural advancement.
He disclosed that MAAUN has over 5,000 students, with 80% being female, demonstrating the university’s dedication to empowering women and promoting gender equality in education.
Speaking at the event, Madam Malame Mangazha, explained that the World Heritage Volunteers Initiative, established in 2008, aims to engage young people in the protection and promotion of world heritage sites.
She added that Kano was chosen for its rich history and ancient landmarks, including the Kano City Walls, which stand as enduring symbols of African civilization and craftsmanship.
In his presentation, the ED of the African Institute for Solutions and Development (AISD), Dr Salisu Mohammad Lawal, highlighted the institute’s vital role in connecting academic research with real-world impact.
According to him, AISD continues to advance MAAUN’s mission of empowering youth, fostering innovation, and promoting cultural sustainability across Africa.
The event featured educational presentations and skills acquisition sessions by MAAUN staff and invited guests as well as a Q&A
and photo sessions, where participants shared passion for heritage preservation.
The program was attended by the VP Administration, Dr Habib Awais Abubakar, VP Campus Life, Dr Hamza Garba, Head Career Guidance, Training and Placement, Engr Bashir Garba, among others.
