The Kano Visual Artists Association (KAVAAS), in collaboration with Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria (MAAUN), commemorated World Photography Day with a conference and engaging celebration.
Held at the Abubakar Adamu Rasheed Twin Theatre of MAAUN, the event attracted a diverse audience including academics, media professionals, seasoned photographers, students, and art enthusiasts from across the country.
The conference, the first of its kind in Kano, featured a series of engaging presentations on photography, videography, and the ethics of image-making in the modern age.
In his remarks, Alhaji Ado APS, one of Kano’s pioneer photographers, emphasized the importance of photography as a tool for education, advocacy, and cultural preservation.
He highlighted the evolution, challenges, and merits of photography, advising young photographers on patience, creativity, and collaboration.
Attendees engaged in insightful discussions led by industry experts and veteran photographers who have significantly shaped the visual storytelling landscape in Kano and beyond.
Some of the presenters included Dr. Sabina Brokoniecka from the University of Warsaw, Poland; Dr. Ashiru Tukur Inuwa from Bayero University; and veteran photo-journalist, Sani Maikatanga.
Other seasoned academics, cinematographers, and filmmakers such as Dr. Musa Abdullahi Sufi, Hajiya Maimuna S Bello, Mr. Akeem Sani, and Hassan Giggs also spoke on topics ranging from the evolution of and innovation in photography to ethical practices in documenting people and communities.
Earlier in his speech, the President of MAAUN, Prof. (Dr.) Mohammad Israr, emphasized the importance of photography in preserving cultural heritage.
He lauded CAVAAS for organizing the event in MAAUN, assuring them of his continued support for hosting similar events in the future.
The Chairman of CAVAAS, Mr. Balarabe Uba (Balancy), stated that the program aimed not only to honor the art of photography but also to inspire the next generation of visual storytellers in Northern Nigeria.
Balancy also called for continued collaboration among artists, educators, and institutions to promote ethical standards and innovation within the creative industry.
The event also featured a musical performance by students, adding a lively cultural element to the celebration.
World Photography Day is observed annually on August 19 to recognize the contributions of photographers and highlight the impact of photography on society.
