Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria (MAAUN) made a strong mark at the 10th Annual International Conference of the Association of Professional Counselors in Nigeria (APROCON), held from 3rd–8th August 2026 at the New Site, Bayero University Kano (BUK). MAAUN was represented by Prof. Abubakar Sadiq Haruna, Director, Institute of African Higher Education Research and Innovations (IAHERI), and Dr. Abdullahi Garba, Head of the General Education Unit.
The major highlight of MAAUN’s participation was Prof. Haruna’s presentation of the lead paper, “AI-Driven Predictive Modelling and Next-Generation Screening in Substance Use Counselling.” The paper showcased an innovative application of Artificial Intelligence to drug abuse counselling and mental-health promotion, advocating earlier risk identification, targeted prevention and timely professional intervention, while emphasizing that AI should empower rather than replace the professional counsellor.
In recognition of the innovative contribution and significance of the presentation, Prof. Haruna received an award from APROCON. The recognition further highlights MAAUN’s growing visibility in research, innovation, professional counselling and technology-enabled approaches to substance-use prevention and mental-health promotion in Nigeria and Africa.
