MAAUN Mass Com kick off Media Week with Magazine Launch, Industry Tour

Mass Communication Department of Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria has staged its maiden Media Week, combining academic engagement, professional interaction, and hands-on media exposure.

The two-day programme featured the launch of the department’s first magazine, MAAUN Chronicle Magazine, alongside lectures by industry experts and guided tours of leading media organisations.

The magazine was officially unveiled by the President of the University, Prof. (Dr.) Mohammad Israr, on behalf of the Founder, Prof. Adamu Abubakar Gwarzo, who demonstrated his support by purchasing copies of the publication at the rate of 1 million.

Speaking at the launch, Prof. Gwarzo described the magazine as a landmark achievement that showcases the creativity, talent, and hard work of Mass Communication students.

He urged the students to pursue excellence, remain innovative, and uphold the core values of the university in their academic and professional journeys.

Earlier, Prof. Israr commended the organisers and emphasised the vital role of journalism in informing, educating, and shaping society, charging students to uphold ethics, objectivity, and truth as future media professionals.

Activities on the first day included thought-provoking lectures at the Abubakar Adamu Rasheed Twin Theatre and educational visits to Arewa 24, Mohasa TVR, Media Trust, Abubakar Rimi Television, and Image Merchant Promotion Limited.

The first lecture, “Social Media and the Mainstream: How AI is Redefining Audience Engagement,” was delivered by Dr. Garba Ubale Danbatta, General Manager of Radio Nigeria Pyramid FM Kano, while the second presentation was handled by Mr. Murtala Adewale, Chairman of the Kano Correspondents’ Chapel.

In his welcome address, the Head of the Mass Communication Department, Mr. Rabi’u Ya’u Sulaiman, described the Media Week as a practical platform that bridges classroom theory with real-world media practice.

Also speaking, the Chairman of the occasion and Dean of the School of Postgraduate Studies, Prof. Ahmad Maigari Ibrahim, praised the students’ dedication, while the Dean of the School of Social Sciences, Associate Prof. Abdul’aziz Ibrahim, encouraged them to take ownership of the magazine.

The Media Week also featured the presentation of certificates to students whose articles were published in the magazine, with members of the university management and faculty in attendance.
