The students of Department of Physiotherapy, Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria (MAAUN) on Monday celebrated the 2024 World Physiotherapy Day in grand style by organizing debate and quiz competitions as part of activities to commemorate the day.
During the event, invited speakers delivered lectures on various topics, including Job Prospects for Physiotherapists Overseas, the Ethics of Physiotherapy, and the Residency Program in Physiotherapy.
Additional topics covered included the Nigerian Society of Physiotherapy and its membership, the Medical Rehabilitation Therapists (Registration and Membership), Postgraduate Studies in Physiotherapy, and the Nigerian Association of Physiotherapy Students (NAPS) membership and structure.
In his remarks at the occasion, the chairman of the Nigerian Society of Physiotherapy, Kano State Chapter represented by the Secretary of the association, Dr. Yakubu Abubakar described physiotherapy as a wonderful profession.
He said the students should be proud of studying physiotherapy because they have the opportunity of contributing their quota to the health sector as well as in providing quality health care services.
He commended the management of MAAUN for encouraging the students with the enabling environment to organize the event.
Earlier, the Head of Department of Physiotherapy in MAAUN, Dr. Naziru B. Mukhtar appreciated the students for organizing the event stressing that the program was purely an initiative of students of the department.
The 2024 World Physiotherapy Day has the theme: Low Back Pain (LBP)– A Global Pandemic.
The event was organized to raise awareness about the impact of low back pain, a widespread health issue affecting millions globally.
In his welcome address, the President of MAAUN, Prof. (Dr.) Mohammad Israr said the day, which was founded in 1951, marks the unity and solidarity of the global physiotherapy community.
While felicitating with Nigerian physiotherapists on this momentous occasion, Prof. Israr called on them to join hands in promoting the profession not only in Nigeria but across the world.
The Vice President Campus Life, Dr. Hamza Garba said the university decided to celebrate the day because of the importance of the profession in health care service delivery.
He thanked all those who attended the event and members of staff for their contribution to the success of the entire program.
The event which was held at the Professor Abubakar Adamu Rasheed Twin Theatre, was also attended by the Vice President Administration, Dr. Habib Awais Abubakar and Head, Human Resource Unit, Hajiya Maimunat S. Bello, among others.
