A team from the Medical Rehabilitation Therapist Board of Nigeria (MRTB), has arrived at Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria, Kano, for the accreditation of Doctor of Physiotherapy (DPT) program in the university.
The board was established by law to regulate the training and practice of seven professions in Nigeria including physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and clinical audiology, amongst others.
The accreditation team led by Prof. Jibrin Muhammad of the Bayero University, Kano, was received by some management staff of MAAUN, who later conducted them round the university for facility assessment.
In his remarks, the team lead, Prof. Muhammad explained that the team was in the university for a peer review to ensure that the program being run in the university meets the acceptable standard noting that without which quality will likely be compromised.
He said the accreditation exercise would focus its assessment on physical facilities, laboratories, library and staff strength among others, assuring that the team will be fair and objective in its assignment.
“The exercise is necessary as it helps maintain the standard of physical therapy practice without which quality will be compromised,” he said.
Prof. Muhammad appreciated the management for the warm reception accorded them since their arrival in the university.
He also promised to make appropriate recommendations and useful advices that would guide the university in its efforts to promote academic excellence.
In his welcome address, the Vice President Administration, Dr. Habib Abubakar Awais, welcomed the team for the visit, hoping that the exercise would give the university an opportunity to operate according to international best practices.
He assured that the university would accord the team maximum support and cooperation for the successful conduct of the exercise, stressing that the university would strictly adhere to the rules and regulations set by the council.
In his remarks, the President of MAAUN, Prof. (Dr.) Mohammad Israr, who gave a brief on the university, said MAAUN would need the guidance and advice of the team in its efforts to promote academic excellence.
He used the occasion to praise the chair, Physiotherapy Department, Associate Prof. Nazir Mukhtar for his hard work and innovative ideas which made the department one of the best in the university.
Also speaking, the Director Academic Planning and Quality Assurance, Dr. Nura A. Yaro, said there are 22 academic programs being run in the university but Physiotherapy Department is one of the best department– courtesy of its Chair, Associate Prof. Nazir Bashir Mukhtar.
