In a major step towards strengthening partnership and promoting innovation, officials from the TechnoServe on Thursday paid a visit to Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria (MAAUN), Kano.
TechnoServe is currently undertaking a project, Skilling Adolescent and Young Women on Entrepreneurship and Employment (SAY-WEE) under the sponsorship of the United Nations Children’s Fund,(UNICEF).
The purpose of the visit was to conduct due diligence and assessment of the university’s facilities and its innovative contributions to education so as to enable MAAUN students to benefit from the project.
SAY-WEE project is expected to improve the employability and Entrepreneurship of 37,000 adolescents girls (13-17) and Young Women (18-25) in Lagos and Kano States.
The delegation was under the leadership of Adebisi Momodu, Senior Enterprise Development Specialist, who was accompanied by Aisha Sulaiman, Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning Specialist.
Their presence reflected UNICEF’s focus on engaging with forward-thinking academic institutions to enable their students to benefit from the project by getting the needed skills and knowledge they require in entrepreneurship ventures.
The officials were warmly received by Dr. Habib Awais Abubakar, Vice President Administration of MAAUN, along with some faculty members.
The TechnoServe officials were later conducted around some of the university’s facilities, including the MAAUN Innovation Hub situated within the School of Computing.
This hub is a testament to the university’s commitment to nurturing creativity and practical problem-solving among students.
At the Innovation Hub, the delegation was introduced to groundbreaking projects developed by students under expert supervision.
Among the showcased innovations were a device designed to automate attendance registration and iLearn, a software platform that provides students with access to lecture notes and past examination questions, both of which highlighted MAAUN’s emphasis on blending technology with education.
After a brief presentation at the hub, by Abubakar Ibrahim Tukur, the delegation was taken to the Software Lab, which is currently under construction and signifies MAAUN’s forward-looking approach to enhancing research and development capabilities.
The tour ended at the Abubakar Adamu Rasheed Twin Lecture Theatre, a state-of-the-art facility that exemplifies MAAUN’s dedication to creating a conducive learning environment for students, with its modern design and functionality leaving a lasting impression on the visiting team.
In their separate remarks, the TechnoServe officials commended MAAUN for its innovative strides and role in advancing higher education in Nigeria.
