The Professor Abubakar Adamu Rasheed Twin Theatre came alive as Mass Communication students of Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria took centre stage during the second day of the maiden Media Week 2026.
The event featured a blend of intellectual exchange and creative expression, including a debate competition, talent showcase, and the presentation of students’ academic and creative achievements.
A major attraction was the debate session between senior and junior students, where participants engaged passionately on two topical issues: “The Rise of Social Media Has Killed the Relevance of Traditional Journalism” and “The Nigerian Media Has Failed in Its Constitutional Watchdog Role Over Governance.”
From sharp arguments to confident delivery, the debate highlighted the students’ critical thinking and communication skills.
The tempo shifted as students lit up the stage during the talent showcase, displaying diverse abilities that drew applause from the audience, while another segment celebrated outstanding academic and creative accomplishments.
Speaking at the event, the President of MAAUN, Prof. (Dr.) Mohammad Israr, described the programme as a platform for media excellence, creativity, and professional development.
In his goodwill message, the Vice President Administration, Dr. Habib Awais Abubakar, praised the students for taking bold steps to develop their skills and reminded them that effective communication remains the backbone of journalism.
He also commended the Mass Communication Department for organising the Media Week, describing it as a landmark initiative in the university.
Similarly, the Head of the Human Resource Unit, Hajia Maimuna S. Bello, applauded the organisers and students for their enthusiasm and active participation.
Certificates were later presented to students who participated in the debate and other activities.
Among those in attendance were the Director, Africa Institute for Solutions and Development, Dr Salisu Muhammad; Head of the International Office, Engr. Bashir Garba; his assistant, Mrs. Haresh Janvi, alongside faculty members and students.
