The students of the Department of Physiotherapy, Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria (MAAUN), on Thursday, 17th September, 2026, celebrated the 2026 World Physiotherapy Day in grand style.
The event, which took place at the Professor Abubakar Adamu Rasheed Twin Theatre, featured a series of student-led activities, including a quiz competition, educative drama performance and academic presentations.
The 2026 World Physiotherapy Day, themed “Movement for a Healthier Tomorrow,” with special focus on stroke and cardiovascular disease, brought together students, staff and invited guests to raise awareness and highlight the importance of physiotherapy in healthcare services.
In his opening remarks, the Acting President of MAAUN, Prof. Ibrahim Alhaji Lawal, said the event provided participants with an opportunity to recognise the role of physiotherapy in healthcare services.
Prof. Lawal expressed gratitude to the university’s Founder, Prof. Adamu Abubakar Gwarzo, for his tremendous support in making the event possible, while also appreciating the organisers and the Nigerian Association of Physiotherapy Students (NAPS), MAAUN branch.
In his remarks, the Head of Department, Physiotherapy, Dr. Hamza Sabo, described the day as an important occasion to reflect on the work of physiotherapists, noting that the profession plays a significant role in promoting mobility and improving quality of life.
In his goodwill message, the Dean, School of Health Sciences, Dr. Kabiru Yakasai, urged the students to be more committed to their studies so as to achieve the desired success.
Also speaking, the Vice President, Campus Life, Dr. Kabir Abdullahi, commended the students for organising the celebration and urged them to take advantage of such activities to broaden their knowledge and practical understanding of physiotherapy.
In their separate remarks, Dr. Aisha Adhama and Dr. Aisha Shitu spoke on cardiovascular diseases, which, according to them, are among the major causes of death.
They charged the students to remain focused on their studies so that they could make a difference wherever they find themselves.
Highlights of the event included the presentation of certificates to participants, while winners of the quiz competition received cash prizes. Debate participants were also recognised for their contributions.
The event was also attended by the Vice President, Administration, Dr. Habib Awais Abubakar; Dean, Postgraduate School, Prof. Ahmad Maigari Ibrahim; and Director, Institute of Africa Higher Education Research and Innovation (IAHER), Prof. Abubakar Sadiq Haruna.
Also in attendance were the Director, Human Resource, Mrs. Maimuna S. Bello; Director Education Support, Dr. Musa Uba, Head, International Office, Engr. Bashir Garba; and some faculty members, among others.
