MAAUN Students Engage Nigeria Revenue Service, Expand Professional Horizons

The Department of Mass Communication at Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria (MAAUN) has taken its 200-level students on an educational visit to the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) to gain firsthand experience of communication practices in professional organisations.

The visit aimed to bridge the gap between classroom learning and professional practice, exposing the students to how organisations manage communication, engage the media, handle crises and maintain relationships with stakeholders.

The students were accompanied by the Head of Department, Mr Rabiu Yau Sulaiman, and Hayatuddeen M. Abdallah of the University’s Corporate Communications Unit.

The delegation was received by a team of NRS officials led by the Regional Administrator for Jigawa, Kano and Katsina states, Dr Ismaila Abdullahi Ahmad.

Other officials included Dr Binta Mahraz, Regional Human Resources Adviser; Nasir Abubakar Tanimu, Regional Change Manager; Abubakar Zamndam, Regional Facility Coordinator; and Muhammad Yamusa, Regional ICT Manager.

In his remarks, Dr Ahmad engaged the students on key aspects of organisational communication, including corporate communication, crisis communication, media engagement and corporate social responsibility.

He highlighted the importance of effective communication in building public trust, protecting an organisation’s reputation and maintaining productive relationships with stakeholders.

Other officials, including Dr Mahraz and Zandam, also shared professional insights and advised the students on the importance of academic commitment, embracing digital media and preparation for the workplace.

The visit featured an interactive session during which the students asked questions and engaged the officials on communication practices within the organisation.

The engagement provided an opportunity for the students to relate theories and concepts learnt in the classroom to practical experiences in a professional environment.

Speaking on behalf of the delegation, the Head of Department, Mr Rabiu Yau Sulaiman, thanked the NRS management and officials for receiving the students and providing them with the opportunity to learn from experienced professionals.

He stressed the importance of educational visits in broadening students’ knowledge and preparing them for careers in journalism, public relations, corporate communication and other related fields.
