A Resource Verification team from the Medical Rehabilitation Therapist Board of Nigeria (MRTB), on Friday, arrived at Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria, Kano, to inspect the facilities put in place for the Doctor of Physiotherapy program in the university.
The board was established by law to regulate the training and practice of seven professions in Nigeria including physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and clinical audiology, amongst others.
The team, led by Prof. Ahmed Adamu Rufai of the Kaduna State University, (KASU), was received by the management staff of MAAUN, who later conducted them round the university for facility assessment.
Other members of the resource verification team were the Head of Department (HOD) Accreditation, MRTB, Dr. Abdulsalam Yakasai and Mr.Omokogbe Tunbosun Emmanuel.
At the entry meeting, the team lead, Prof. Rufai, explained that the team was not in the university on a witch-hunting mission, but rather to ensure that the program being run in the university meets the acceptable standard.
He hinted at some of the areas in which the resource team would conduct their assessment to include the physical facilities, staff strength, grading documents (curriculum), among others.
According to him, the exercise was necessary as it helps to maintain the standard of physical therapy practice and ensures that practitioners are continuously updating their skills and knowledge.
In his welcome address, the Vice President Administration, Dr. Habib Abubakar Awais, expressed happiness for the visit, hoping that the exercise would give the university an opportunity to operate according to international best practices.
Dr. Awais, who gave assurance of the university’s readiness to accord the team maximum support and cooperation for the successful conduct of the exercise, said the university would strictly adhere to the rules and regulations set by the council.
Also speaking, the President of MAAUN, Prof. (Dr.) Mohammad Israr, who gave a brief background of the university, thanked the team for the visit.
He said the visit would give the university the opportunity to learn from their expertise.
Resources inspected during the exercise include the university’s e-library and physical library, university clinic, science laboratories, lecture theatres and staff offices.
During the exit report meeting, the MRTB team applauded the leadership of MAAUN for the warm reception accorded them since their arrival and the cooperation extended to them throughout the exercise.
The team, who expressed satisfaction with the physical facilities, man power, admission requirements and the grading documents in the university, also made some suggestions on areas of improvement.
Responding, the President of MAAUN Group of Universities, Prof. Adamu Abubakar Gwarzo, who commended the team for their thoroughness and expert advice, pledged that the university would continue to work hand in hand with the council to ensure brighter future for physiotherapy profession.
Prof. Gwarzo noted that, as a center of excellence, MAAUN is committed to providing best learning atmosphere and facilities for effective teaching and training of physiotherapy practitioners.
He tasked the regulatory body to continue to be innovative and digital in their operations in order to address the multifaceted challenges facing the professional practice of DPT in Nigeria.
